Standing in the middle of a thunderstorm under a golfer's umbrella, camera at the ready, waiting for the next lighting strike is one of the keys to the creation of Don Naumann's eclectic electric Lightning & Water Photographs.
An Ohio native transplanted to Florida in the 80's, Don studied with
Bruce Evenson, of the Thomas Bruce Studio's in St. Petersburg. Going
on his own in the 90's, Don continues to make an impact in both the
Fine Art and Commercial Art fields with his amazing photographs of Lightning & Water.
Since 1991 Don has spent many a night standing the in rain, shutter wide open, waiting for something to happen. Tenaciously waiting for just the right moment, only 1 or 2 show quality photographs are added to Don's inventory each year.
Kodak and Fuji color film (160 A.S.A.) is used in Don's 1959 Hasselblad camera with a 50 mm Wide Angle Distagon Zeiss lens. Don purposely overexposes the film to get an effect called reciprocity failure. This causes the color shifts seen in some of the works. Different films produce different colors. The timed overexposures range between 10 seconds and 10 minutes. Because Kodak and Fuji no longer sell the chemicals to develop prints from slide film, the slides are drum scanned and printed on an Epson photo printer.
A regular exhibitor at major Florida Art Fairs & Festivals, including the prestigious invitation only Mainsail Art Festival in St. Petersburg Florida, plan to see Don's works in person. Since Don's first exhibition in December of 1998 his outstanding photographs have been included in exhibitions in Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Ohio, and California. You will find his dramatic images adorning the walls of photography collectors and lightning fans around the world.
Don's work has been showcased on the cover and inside Central Florida's Groove magazine, and featured in Water's Edge magazine. His images have also graced the cover of the Oldsmar Florida Chamber of Commerce Top o' the Bay publication, and provided stunning chapter title pages for The Glass Art Society Journal. Don was honored by having one of his
photos selected as the official poster of the 30th annual Tarpon Springs Arts and Crafts Festival in 2004.
